Performance Management Evolution: What Are the Success Factors?

Featuring HR Leadership Panel


Performance appraisals have been around for a long time, but is there a better way?  Join us for an interactive forum where HR leaders in our region will discuss how their companies are re-thinking employee performance beyond the traditional annual rating process.  Through discussions with panelists and roundtable conversations, we will tackle practical questions and gain insights from companies at different points on the journey away from the conventional process.


Participants will:


  • Hear about fresh approaches to employee performance programs that companies are taking.
  • Learn how HR leaders are managing change, overcoming challenges, and defining success. 
  • Exchange experiences and best practices with colleagues. 


Katie Bowling, Performance and Reward Practice Leader, MassMutual
Katie Bowling brings approximately 2 decades of Human Resource experience working for Fortune 100 companies.  During her career, her responsibilities have spanned HR consulting, talent and performance management, recruiting, employee relations, compensation design and administration, and HR technology optimization. In her role as the Performance and Reward Practice Leader at MassMutual Financial Group, she is the strategist and thought leader for the innovative rating-free design of MassMutual’s performance management approach which emphasizes frequent, forward looking conversations centered on clarity, accountability and development.  Katie is a certified leadership coach and change management champion.  She is a recipient of MassMutual’s Leadership Excellence award. Katie earned her undergraduate degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Penn State University graduating with honors and her M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts.









Mark Gelinas, Vice President, Talent Management with Virtus Investment Partners

In his role at Virtus, Mark is responsible for building the infrastructure, best-in-class tools and programs to support the acquisition, development and retention of key talent. He partners with business leaders and managers throughout the company to develop plans for current and future workforce needs and manages the recruiting efforts to fill those needs. He leads the effort to cultivate effective performance management practices throughout the organization as well as creating career paths for employee advancement and development plans that help retain and grow the skills of Virtus’ employees. Prior to joining Virtus in 2014, Mark spent 6 years at The Hartford Financial Services Group in various talent-related positions, including as director of university and diversity relations and the Early Career Development Program. He also led talent acquisition activities for The Hartford’s finance, risk management and information technology areas. Prior to his time at The Hartford, Mark spent 10 years in the Boston and Hartford offices of PwC, where he held leadership roles in recruiting and business development. He earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Bentley University and successfully completed the Certified Public Accountant exam in the State of Massachusetts. He resides in Longmeadow, MA with his wife Mary and their two children, Luke and Kate.


      Dr. Samuel C. Rindell, Global Talent, Learning, and Organizational Development Leader, Cigna
Dr. Rindell leads a multifunctional global human resource team that is responsible for enterprise learning and development, leadership development, client management, change management, coaching, facilitation, global educational reimbursement, advisory services, vendor relations, consulting services, learning technologies, and innovation at Cigna. During his tenure at Cigna, Sam has played a key role in enhancing performance management across the global enterprise, significantly advanced leadership development, and revamped Cigna's educational reimbursement program.  He also leads the Global Leaders as Teachers and Manager Effectiveness initiatives for the company.  Prior to joining Cigna, Sam spent twelve years at Pfizer in various senior leadership roles within sales, research and development, human resources, and talent, learning and organizational development. Sam holds many professional certifications including: Hogan, viaEDGE Learning Agility, MBTI, DiSC, ProSci Change Management, Linkage Change Management, Emotional Intelligence 2.0, Hay Group Leadership Styles & Climate, TKI Conflict Modes and is certified as an executive coach through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). In addition to his role at Cigna, Sam has served as a professor and often leads executive education sessions and key note lectures in the areas of leadership, management, human resources, sales, and healthcare. He holds a doctorate degree in Leadership and Healthcare and completed a post-doc Advanced Certificate Program in Strategic Human Resources Management at Cornell University.
