About the Session


Strategic Talent Acquisition and Retention at Connecticut Children’s is a CEO-sponsored initiative. Its goal is to create the most positive team member life cycle experience possible, from first touch with a candidate through acquisition, on-boarding, and retention.


Healthcare organizations suffer from some of the highest turnover rates in all US industries. Nurses, in particular, are in high demand with a shortage of ready talent and high demand and mobility among those with the right experience.  Hear from three nursing executives from Connecticut Children’s how the STAR initiative is tackling these issues, not only for nurses but for seven key clinical roles.


Regardless of your industry, you will leave this interactive session with strategies to gain senior leadership buy-in and reboot your entire employee life-cycle!


About the Speakers:



Moderator: Lenny Shine, CT Children’s Medical Center, Senior Organizational Effectiveness Consultant


Throughout his career, Lenny has demonstrated the ability to bring together disparate groups to develop solutions and forge better relationships to resolve their organizations’ business challenges. He started his corporate career as an external consultant for the Work-Out process for GE, then progressed through a series of positions in organizational effectiveness, change management, and Human Resources. 

Lenny earned a Masters degree (MPA) from Baruch College-CUNY and his Bachelor’s degree (BA) from Hunter College-CUNY. He holds various certifications in psychometric and leadership assessment instruments (e.g. MBTI, Profilor™, HBDI, FIRO-B, DiSC).




Shannon Grad, RN, BSN, MSN, NEA-BC has over twenty years of clinical and leadership experience in the healthcare setting, Shannon Grad, RN, BSN, MSN, NEA-BC is currently the Senior Director of Patient and Family Experience at Connecticut Children’s in Hartford, CT. Shannon passionately leads the family- centered care vision at the medical center. Her creative energy has improved the quality and commitment to service for children, families and employees.








Joanne Meucci, MSN, RN has been a nurse for 30 years. She earned her BSN from Saint Joseph College and her MSN from The University of Hartford.  Joanne worked most of her career at the bedside in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit before becoming  a case manager, ambulatory nurse manager and director and currently is the nursing director for all Medical/Surgical departments and the Bed Managers at CT Children’s.  Joanne is the co-lead for the Retention Project Team at CT Children’s, where she has led her team to implement charge/preceptor pay, enhance the tuition reimbursement program, implement NurseGrid  and launch a Mentorship Pilot Program.  Joanne lives in Newington with her husband Tom.  She has 2 sons, Patrick and Thomas and enjoys spending time at the beach. 





  Kristy Dixon Stinger DNP, RN, NEA-BC has been practicing nursing for over 20 years and is currently the nursing director for the Emergency Department and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Connecticut Children’s in Hartford, CT. Kristy has an extensive background in critical care and cardiac nursing, nursing education, nursing leadership and risk management.  Kristy earned her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Quinnipiac University, her master of science in education from the University of Bridgeport and her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Oakland University. She holds a nurse executive, advanced certification (NEA-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Kristy is a published author in several nursing and healthcare journals. She  has presented locally and nationally on a variety of clinical and professional topics, and has been a featured speaker at industry conferences.
